West Ham are coming off a 3-0 thrashing at Chelsea the previous matchday – that was West Ham’s second goalless game this Premier League (PL) campaign and they have already had two losses. in four league games (G1, E1, P2). It was also the first time in four league games that the “Hammers” failed to regain points after conceding first in their respective commitments (W1, E2, P1).
Their strong home performance (W3, E2, P1) has pushed West Ham to the top half of the standings – their only loss in this sequence was against the league’s best visitor, Manchester United. Scoring first is a great indicator of how games are going, as the team that has scored has avoided defeat in six of the last seven West Ham home games in the PL (W4, E2, P1).
Brighton needed a goal beyond the 80th minute to draw 1-1 the previous day and have already had five league games without a win (E3, P2) – they are also just two points above the relegation zone. In particular, six of Brighton’s 16 goals in PL have been scored since min. 80 onwards and three of those goals generated draws after conceding first.
Trips to London have not been Brighton’s strong suit, with just two wins in their last 17 away matches to the English capital on PL (E6, P9). Players to watch: West Ham have won all three PL games in which Jarrod Bowen has scored – twice he scored the last goal of the match. Brighton meanwhile have remained undefeated in both PL games in which Danny Welbeck has scored (W1, E1).
