Southampton now record two defeats in as many games after the international break after falling 4-0 at Anfield in their last meeting in November. An upcoming couple of home games seems like something he should take advantage of if he wants to emulate last season’s act of survival, during which he had ten more points after 13 Premier League (PL) rounds than his current total.
So far, Southampton’s six home games at PL have had a final margin of less than 1.5 goals separating the teams (W2, E3, P1). Partly because of that, Southampton have earned just one point in PL’s last three home games in which they conceded the first goal.
Leicester City remain a figure of horror for Southampton, since an unforgettable 9-0 win at St Mary’s Stadium in October 2019, which remains PL’s biggest away win for a team. Aiming to build on their league win with the most total goals of the season (4-2 against Watford), the Foxes travel south undefeated in three league games away from home. (G1, E2).
The visitor has also avoided defeat in their last four visits to St Mary’s Stadium (W3, E1). The closest of those victories (August 2018) came from a 2-1 scoreline, as has every one of Leicester’s last five league wins recorded away from home at any venue. The last three of them saw the “Foxes” score in each half, conceding a goal that meant the tie and scoring a victory goal after the 60th minute.
Players to watch: Adam Armstrong scored the winning goal in Southampton’s latest win (min. 3), meaning his two goals this season have been recorded in the first 25 minutes. If we go to the other extreme, James Maddison was the last player to score on a moving ball play for Leicester at 9-0 and, more recently, two of his last four goals in PL have been recorded in the period between minutes 70 and 79.
Highlight: Six of Southampton’s last eight PL games at home that ended in a draw or loss have produced fewer than 2.5 total goals.
