However, the club is only three points off the European places, so the battle for continental qualification remains wide open.
For its part, Auxerre finished 11th last season with 42 points in 34 matches — a solid record for a mid-table team. But the start of this season has been much less convincing. After a 1–0 win on the opening day, Auxerre suffered three defeats, followed by a narrow 1–0 victory and further losses. With only six points from seven matches, Auxerre are 16th in the table. It seems increasingly likely that the team will have to fight to avoid relegation and remain in the top flight next season.
