Real Madrid has had a spectacular start to the season. Following a busy transfer window and the arrival of a new manager, Los Blancos began LaLiga with four victories: 1-0 against Osasuna, 3-0 against Oviedo, 2-1 against Mallorca and 2-1 away against Real Sociedad. After four matchdays, Real is the only team in LaLiga to have won all of its games.
Marseille has had an uneven start to the season: two high-scoring victories, 5-2 against Paris and 4-0 against Lorient, but marred by two narrow defeats in which De Zerbi’s team failed to score a single goal: 0-1 against Lyon and 0-1 against Rennes.
Marseille will play in the group stage for the first time since the 2022/23 season, after a three-year absence. That season, the team finished bottom of a group with Sporting, Eintracht and Tottenham, picking up just six points in six games. This campaign should show how much the French side has progressed in that time and whether it can compete on equal terms with Europe’s best teams.
