Lille got off to a flying start in Ligue 1. After a draw in their opening game, they went on to win three consecutive matches, with a goal difference of 10–3. Their momentum then slowed down a little, with three defeats in all competitions — two in Ligue 1 and one in the Europa League — although they held PSG to a 1–1 draw. After eight games, Lille have 14 points and are in sixth place. But the table is tight: they are only four points behind the leaders and two points off the podium.
Metz, meanwhile, are back in Ligue 1 after finishing third in Ligue 2 last season. Les Grenats secured their promotion via the play-offs, beating Dunkerque 1–0 and then dominating Reims over two legs (4–2). But their return to the top flight is turning into a nightmare. After eight games, Metz are still without a win, with six defeats and two draws. Bottom of the table with only two points and the worst defence in the league, the Lorraine side are already five points behind the fifteenth-placed team. If they want to stay up, Metz must start winning games.
