Colombia vs Ecuador Prediction & Tips
Two countries that come from opposite results last Sunday will seek to establish themselves in the top four of the South American World Cup Qualifying (ECM) when Ecuador travels to Colombia for the first time in more than five years. Colombia has a dominant track record between the two – both at home and on neutral grounds – and has won seven consecutive matches away from Ecuador since September 2009.
A second consecutive goalless draw as “underdog” on the last day kept Colombia in fifth place, which is a consolation since CONMEBOL’s fifth can qualify for the World Cup in the repechage between confederations, which which in turn could lead to a third consecutive appearance for Colombia in the World Cup finals. That third tie with Brazil in four games should be a confidence booster, particularly as they have now earned points in seven straight Knockout games in a row (G2, E5) across the entire continent.
Ecuador missed the 2018 World Cup finals despite winning its first four Knockout matches and must therefore beware of a similar disappearance after triumphing in three of its first four matches this cycle. A shocking defeat in Venezuela threatens to derail what would otherwise have been a relatively strong campaign by the second-lowest-ranked nation in South America (G5, E1, P5).
Often dependent on their favorable home conditions to score points in the Knockout, Ecuador’s away record (W3, E4, P15) in the last three rounds of the Knockout has held him back. Add to that the fact that he still has to play away from home against the two powerhouses, Brazil and Argentina, any point on foreign soil could be immensely valuable.
Players to watch: Winger Luis Díaz was the last to score in an international match for Colombia at home. Ecuador’s only goalscorer in their most recent clash, Enner Valencia, has scored before halftime in his last two games.
