Chelsea are going into this match in sparkling form. After a 3–1 defeat to Brighton, the team has regained its stability, stringing together three consecutive victories in all competitions: a 1–0 win against Benfica in the Champions League, a 2–1 triumph over Liverpool in the Premier League, and a clear 3–0 away win against Nottingham Forest last weekend. The Blues are also solid at home: in their last five games at Stamford Bridge, they have recorded three wins, one draw and one defeat. Defensively, Chelsea have been very solid, conceding only one goal in three of their last four games, proof of their well-organised defence.
Ajax are currently going through a difficult period, far from the level they have shown in previous seasons. In all competitions, the team are struggling to string together results and have gone three games without a win. Last weekend, Ajax lost at home to AZ Alkmaar, and previously conceded a spectacular 3–3 draw against Sparta Rotterdam. In the Eredivisie, after nine games, Ajax are in fourth place with 16 points, already nine points behind leaders Feyenoord. The start of their European campaign has also been difficult: after two games, the Dutch side have yet to score a single point or goal, leaving them second from bottom in their group.
