Alavés and Espanyol are exceeding expectations from the start of the league season. The Basque team is twelfth with 12 points and a 3-point lead over Valencia, who are third from bottom.
Alavés are comfortably mid-table, mainly due to their results at Mendizorroza, where they have recorded two wins, two draws and just one defeat so far. Away from home, they have recorded one win, one draw and three defeats.
On the negative side, it is worth noting that the Vitoria-based side has failed to score in three of its last four league games, although this week it made up for it with a 7-0 away win over modest Getxo in the Copa del Rey.
Espanyol are even better than Alavés. The Periquitos are fifth in the Primera División and have won three consecutive games, two in the league and the most recent in the cup against Atlétic Lleida (1-2).
