Al-Ahly, the club with the record number of CAF Champions League titles and one of Africa’s most successful teams, crashed out of the continental final this season. In the semi-finals, the Egyptian giants lost to Mamelodi Sundowns under the away goals rule, which still applies in African tournaments.
