Egypt and Nigeria were eliminated in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations by Senegal and Morocco respectively. Both countries will have to recover quickly from the disappointment. A bronze medal is still an excellent achievement.
The disappointment will be particularly great for Egypt. Led by Mohamed Salah, the national team has been a contender for the top spot in recent years. The Liverpool star is now 33 and it is likely that he has made his last appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria has a more balanced team. Victor Osimhen is the undisputed star, but there are other players who play in major leagues and are still relatively young.
The last meeting between the countries was on 16 December last year. Egypt won the friendly match 2-1. The two previous editions were both won 1-0 by Nigeria.
