Nigeria and Morocco face off in Rabat on Wednesday to decide who will reach the final of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
After beating Algeria relatively easily in the quarterfinals (2-0), Nigeria has become the team to beat in the AFCON thanks to its perfect record so far. It is the highest-scoring team in the tournament, with 14 goals, and the Super Eagles are looking to become the first team in the history of the competition to score two or more goals in six consecutive matches in a single edition. That record could help them reach their ninth final in the history of the tournament. They have never before managed four consecutive games without conceding a goal in the AFCON, something they will try to achieve to reach their third final in the competition after 1976 and 2004. Its offensive prowess will also be key to reaching the decisive match, and with the “Lions of the Atlas” having scored in 17 of its last 18 AFCON matches, it seems well positioned to take the next step and end a 50-year wait to regain the title.
