Botswana now has only a theoretical chance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, and that would require a series of extremely favourable circumstances. The Zebras currently have nine points after eight games, with two matches left to play — both of which they must win. On top of that, all the other teams would have to lose for Botswana to retain any hope. That’s far too many variables to come together, which means that their World Cup dream is, in reality, already over.
The same cannot be said for Uganda, who remain well placed. After eight matches, the Cranes have 15 points and are in second place in the group, four points behind the leaders. Interestingly, Uganda will face Algeria on the final day of qualifying. For this match to be truly decisive, however, Somalia would need to take points off Algeria – which I personally doubt, even if it is a possibility.
