Last year, Shelbourne managed to break the hegemony of Shamrock Rovers in Irish football. The capital club won gold for the first time in 18 years and returned to the top of the local game.
In 2013, the historic club was relegated from the top flight and spent seven long years trying to make a comeback. In 2020, the team managed to get a glimpse of the Premier Division, but could not hold on and was relegated again.
Derry City is the only Northern Irish representative competing in the league in its neighbouring country. In recent years, the team has experienced an upturn in results and has finished at least fourth in four consecutive seasons.
Last season they failed to qualify for European competition and the start of the current season was, frankly, disappointing. After a shaky start, Tiernan Lynch managed to stabilise the situation, but in mid-May the team again suffered a considerable slump.
