Nantes could hardly ask for an easier opponent, needing just a point to secure their Ligue 1 status, given the considerably worse goal difference of 16th-placed Le Havre. It has been another tumultuous season for “Canaries” coach Antoine Kombouaré, who returned to the club in March 2024 to save them from relegation last season, but this campaign could end with a thumping win against bottom side Montpellier.

However, they seem to have saved their favourite opponent for last, as Nantes have won 64% of their home Ligue 1 games against Montpellier in the 21st century (G9, P5), their highest success rate against an opponent they have faced more than ten times at home during that period.
Already relegated Montpellier should be playing with the freedom of not having to fight for relegation, but they have not fared much better, the most recent being a 4-1 defeat at the hands of PSG. Incredibly, that was their 25th defeat of the season, and if they add one more, Montpellier will record the fewest points in a full Ligue 1 season made up of 18 or 20 clubs, counting three points for a win.
