Saturday’s final match in Liga Portugal sees the leaders take on a team in the bottom half of the table. Four points clear of Benfica Lisbon, Sporting Portugal will be hoping for a slip-up against Santa Clara to extend their lead at the top of the league. To do that, Rui Borges’s side will have to put on a better show than they did in the Champions League, where they lost 3-0 at home to Borussia Dortmund ….. With qualification for the last 16 in doubt, SCP cannot afford to lose the title race on Portuguese soil. After two defeats in the space of four days (Porto, 1-1), the Lions are obliged to bounce back against a team that is supposed to be inferior on paper!
Arouca have been keeping a close eye on the European Cup results of their opponents this evening. The confidence of the Yellow and Blues has understandably increased ahead of kick-off, especially given their impressive form at the time of writing: no defeat since the end of 2024, three wins and three draws in Portugal. Naturally, Vasco Seabra’s men believe they can achieve something this weekend. However, they must be careful not to confuse confidence with arrogance, or the visitors risk falling flat on their faces at the end of the 90 minutes. If they can put in a serious performance, as they did at Nacional in early February, they could well achieve something against SCP, who have been more inconsistent since Ruben Amorim’s departure.
