Burnley – Southampton (Pick, Prediction, Preview) Preview

Burnley vs Southampton Prediction & Tips

Michael Jackson’s first game as Burnley’s interim manager did not go badly, but the 1-1 draw against West Ham may not be enough if the team do not continue to add to their tally to climb out of the relegation zone. Burnley have a problem when it comes to holding leads as, after conceding the draw against West Ham, the Clarets have now dropped six of 10 games in which they have scored first (E4, P2).

A rarefied atmosphere awaits Burnley at Turf Moor as the decision to sack Sean Dyche has not gone down well, but three points against Southampton could improve that atmosphere. Three wins in six games against the ‘Saints (E2, P1) at this stadium in the Premier League (PL) is a good record for Burnley to be thinking of a second successive PL home win for the first time since December 2020.

Southampton ended a five-game winless run (E1, P4) with a shock 1-0 win over Arsenal last weekend, which boosts their chances of finishing in the top half of the table. Playing away from home can be good for the Saints as they have avoided defeat in three of their last four games away from home (G1, E2), something they have achieved despite having conceded at least one goal in ten successive away games in the PL.

That clean sheet against Arsenal could give Southampton plenty of confidence to break that run of away goals conceded. It is worth noting that Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side have not kept a clean sheet in a midweek game for the last 13 times, and have conceded an average of 2.69 goals per game in that run.
Players to watch: Wout Weghorst scored against West Ham and was the first player to score without Sean Dyche since Chris McCann’s goal against Bristol City in October 2012. Meanwhile, Armando Broja scored in the previous game between these two sides and both of his PL away goals for the Saints came before half-time.
Key stat: Burnley are the PL side who have led at half-time the least number of times this season (two).
