Union Berlin – Wolfsburg (Pick, Prediction, Preview) Preview

Union Berlin vs Wolfsburg Prediction & Tips

Time is running out for Union Berlin to salvage something tangible from what has been their worst Bundesliga season to date, with a 1-1 midweek draw against Mainz meaning they have now won just one game in 2024 (E2, P2). Their poor performances also mean that the dreaded bottom three is still close at hand, as they finished the last matchday in fifteenth place and just three points above Cologne.
The capital outfit will at least have coach Nenad Bjelica back on the bench for this game after serving a three-game suspension. That could give the hosts a boost, as could returning to action in front of their own fans, as the Union won their last three Bundesliga games at home, conceding just one goal in the process.

Wolfsburg will be eager to spoil the party and follow up on the 2-1 win over the hosts in the previous league clash between them, but achieving a first double over their league rivals looks a tall order considering they are winless in their last five visits to the Union (E2, P3). Wolfsburg had to take the lead twice in September to secure victory, but having dropped 15 points from winning positions this season – only Borussia Mönchengladbach have lost more (23) – it is fair to say that Wolfsburg offer no guarantees even going ahead on the scoreboard.

Wolves come into the clash on the back of a four-game draw streak, which comes after sharing points just once in their 22 top-flight matches before that. They embarked on this streak immediately after a defeat, meaning that, should they fail to win here, they would record six consecutive Bundesliga matches without a win for the first time under Niko Kovač.
Players to watch: Robin Gosens scored the Union’s only goal in the previous meeting between them in the league, helping to make it six goals for them this season registered before the break. He will face his former teammate Kevin Behrens, who moved from the Union to Wolfsburg right at the end of the January transfer window, and knows how to score at this venue as eight of his last ten goals have come at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
Key stat: The Union have lost only three of their last 21 Bundesliga home games in which they started as betting favorites (G13, E5).
