Argentina vs Peru Prediction & Tips

Argentina’s last game was a historic encounter, as Lionel Messi became the first South American footballer to score 80 international goals and helped his team defeat Uruguay 3-0 – extending their unbeaten streak to 24 games. Ten of those unbeaten clashes came in this qualifying campaign (G6, E4) consolidating La Albiceleste’s control in second place with a six-point gap over their most immediate pursuer.

He will be confident of maintaining that advantage before this engagement against Peru, a team to which Argentina has not lost in World Cup Qualification (CCM) since 1985. To add weight to that statement, Peru is one of four teams of CONMEBOL to which Argentina has never lost in any match at home (out of 22 games) and that includes nine CCM games (G6, E3).

Peru’s hopes of reaching two consecutive World Cups for the second time in its history now look bleak after a 1-0 loss to Bolivia left it four points behind fifth-place Colombia. As three of the remaining six commitments will be against teams hovering above him, seeking fourth and fifth place spots, he will be looking forward to a miracle and a historic victory on this trip to keep his qualifying chances alive.

While the Peruvian team’s last visit to Argentina by CCM ended with a creditable goalless draw, their recent away performance has not been positive at all. In fact, ‘La Blanquirroja’ is on a streak of four successive losses away from home before this key engagement and has lost three of its last four CCM matches in that condition.
Players to watch: Lautaro Martínez’s contribution against Uruguay kept a streak alive and the “Albiceleste” has not lost when the Inter Milan striker sees his rival’s goal. Peru’s hopes will rest on Christian Cueva, whose last eight national goals have resulted in victories, including all three this season.
Highlight: Peru has not conceded more than two goals in a CCM away match since early 2016.
