Paris SG – Marseille (Pick, Prediction, Preview)

Paris SG vs Marseille Prediction & Tips

French giants PSG ended the 2019/20 season in disappointing fashion, losing to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final and their start to the 2020/21 season wasn’t any better. The Ligue 1 champions started their title defence on a losing note, falling 1-0 to newly promoted Lens and now they will be looking to do better when they host rivals Olympique Marseille. Against Lens, the champions missed seven key players including Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Marquinhos, Angel di Maria and Mauro Icardi and in their first match since skipper Thiago Silva’s departure they struggled against the newbies. It took a mistake from third keeper Bulka for Lens to score but the champions were generally poor on the night. This was their second straight defeat and there is no guarantee all the missing stars will be available when they face Marseille though with a fine home run, they have some hope. PSG are unbeaten in their last 10 Ligue 1 home matches, with nine wins in the process and have scored two or more in these. However, they have no clean sheets in three of their last five home matches, having conceded two or more in the three. First choice keeper Keylor Navas could still miss the Marseille game and as the team tries to replace Silva, we could see another error prone defensive display in Paris.

Marseille will be glad to play this game at this particular time. They are coming from a win, though not so comfortable and with key PSG stars absent, the visitors will want to make a statement early in the season. They are well rested, having played at the close of August and with enough rest, they will be hoping to add to PSG’s misery. Marseille took a 2-0 lead in their opening game, against Brest but had uncomfortable moments thereafter though they managed a 3-2 win. With two weeks to prepare, they should do better defensively as they seek a first win over PSG since 2011. The visitors are winless in this clash in the last 20 meetings but with a nine-match unbeaten run away from home in Ligue 1, they will be hoping to end the bad run. Of the nine away matches, they have won seven and failed to score in just one. In the remaining eight, they scored two or more in six. Their last away defeat was heavy, and it was inflicted by PSG – a 4-0 loss in October last year.

Marseille are unbeaten in nine straight away Ligue 1 matches.

PSG are unbeaten in 10 Ligue 1 matches at home.

PSG have conceded two or more in three of the last five home league games.

Marseille have scored two or more in six of the last eight away league matches.

PSG are set to miss a number of their stars in this game and after their opening loss, they will be expected to respond against Marseille. They lacked command in defence and with senior players missing, it was a rather shambolic show as they lost to newly promoted Lens. Against Marseille, the task will be tougher and the champions can’t afford the same mistakes as in the opening game. They have a good run at home and over Marseille and will be hoping to cash in on this. We don’t expect the hosts to have their usual attacking potency though. Marseille have had a good away run in their recent Ligue 1 matches and after the 4-0 loss in Paris in their last visit, revenge will be key in their agenda for this match. Winless in 20 matches against PSG, this is a perfect time to get one over the champions, and having had extra days to prepare, we believe they will be on top here. A win for Marseille looks very likely in this game.
