Valencia finished last LaLiga season in twelfth position, which was a drop from the previous campaign, when they finished ninth. The gap to the European zone was six points, exactly the same as the one that separated them from relegation. The pre-season was not positive either: in five friendly matches, Valencia only managed one win (3-0 against Torino), drew twice and were defeated on two other occasions.
Getafe finished the last LaLiga season in thirteenth place, just behind Valencia and only two points above the relegation zone. The final stretch of the campaign was particularly negative: the team lost seven of the last eight matches and could only manage one win. The summer preparation was not encouraging either: out of five friendlies, Getafe only managed three draws and lost the other two.
