Union Berlin vs Eintracht Frankfurt Prediction & Tips
After the joy of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club’s history last season, Union Berlin have taken a worrying dip in form. A 1-0 loss to Stuttgart left the Berlin outfit eliminated from the DFB-Pokal in midweek, extending their losing streak to 11 consecutive matches, and in each of the last four Urs Fischer’s side failed to score.
Despite being a legend at the club, Fischer is now under immense pressure to keep his job unless he gets better results quickly. He will be grateful to play his next game at home, for although the Union have lost three consecutive league clashes here without being able to score, they did not lose at home in the Bundesliga all of last season, a performance that included a 2-0 win over next visitors Eintracht Frankfurt.
That was one of three defeats for Frankfurt in their previous 16 meetings against the Union (G9, E4) and, given the home side’s recent struggles, Dino Toppmöller’s side should feel confident of claiming their first win away from home in this particular clash since September 2019. The Eagles are likely to have spent most of the last week analyzing their defense following their recent 3-3 draw against Borussia Dortmund, as they failed to hold on to the lead on two occasions.
However, this was somewhat of a surprise, as Frankfurt had allowed just six goals in their other eight Bundesliga games – the fewest in the league. The goal now is to look to move into the top six in the table, and an improved performance away from home would go a long way toward that mission given that their recent win at Hoffenheim was their first league win on rival soil since November 2022 (E7, P7).
Players to watch: The Union’s Kevin Behrens scored when they hosted their arch-rivals last season, and with all four of his goals this season leading to wins, the home side will be hoping he gets on the scoresheet. As for Frankfurt, Omar Marmoush scored a brace against Dortmund, continuing a trend where five of his eight goals this season have opened the scoring for his team.
Key stat: The last four official matches between these teams ended 2-0 (Union Berlin: G2, P2).
