Tottenham could not have had better luck: they are favourites to beat their Swedish opponents on the final day of the Europa League. Spurs are obliged to win to ensure their direct qualification to the round of 16. With a win they will no longer depend on other results. Elfsburg, meanwhile, are coming off the back of two UEFA Cup wins in a row that have put them in the play-off places.
Even with defeat, the Swedes could stay in the top 24. It is a fairly predictable scoreline considering how badly they have fared away and the hierarchy of their English opponents. Besides, the Londoners need to ingratiate themselves with their fans after their dismal form in the Premier League.
Tottenham won the games they needed to win in this Europa League. Qarabag, Ferencvaros, AZ Alkmaar and recently Hoffenheim succumbed to the ‘spurs’. Last week they beat the Germans away and ended a run of three games without a win in the UEFA competition. However, what is worrying is their performance in the Premier League where they have just suffered their third consecutive defeat and have only picked up one of the last 21 points at stake.
Elfsburg are in the midst of a winter break from the Swedish league, which returns to action at the end of March. Their 2024 league season ended in November and they finished seventh. That allowed them to focus fully on the Europa League: they closed the year with a 1-0 win over Qarabag and started 2025 with the same result against Nice. Of course, both clubs are already eliminated from the competition. Away from home they lost all three of their matches and conceded 10 goals.
As Elfsburg are not used to competing in the final stages of European tournaments, they have never faced English clubs in official competitions before. Tottenham, on the other hand, have only one previous meeting with Swedish opponents (Intertoto Cup 1995/96).
