Tenerife was at its peak at the end of the last century, when it spent ten consecutive seasons in the Primera División. Who could have imagined then that after that they would only manage to add two more years, 2001/2002 and 2009/2010. Moreover, after the last promotion, they were relegated for two seasons to the third tier of Spanish football. Well, the last seasons were played in Segunda, and only twice they made it at least to the playoffs. Last spring, they didn’t even achieve that, finishing only twelfth.
The fans were hoping for progress in the new season, but, instead, everything became noticeably more complicated. The change of coach with the arrival of Álvaro Cervera helped for a while, but then there were new failures, including four consecutive defeats. Only against ‘Huesca’, in March, they managed a solid 2-0 win. But then they lost again against ‘Racing de Santander’.
Cadiz recently experienced, if not the best period of its modest history, at least one of the best. They returned to the Primera División, immediately equalling their best result with a twelfth place finish, and then spent several years at that level. The team was relegated again last spring, although it did not look like a clear loser.
The drop took a serious toll on the team. Even here, at a lower level, it was among those fighting for survival. But in the winter, from mid-December onwards, they managed to improve markedly. During that time, they lost only to ‘Albacete’, although it was 0-3. But then they beat ‘Málaga’ and ‘Granada’.
