Shelbourne is regaining its status as a major force in Irish football. Last season, the club surprised by being crowned national champions for the first time since 2006 and also won the Super Cup. However, the current campaign is proving more difficult: Shelbourne currently lie fifth in the Irish Premier Division and are battling for a place in European competition, although they have all but lost their title challenge.
Linfield, like their next opponents, have also recently returned to the top. After two seasons in which the title went to Larne, the team once again became Northern Ireland champions, cementing their position as one of the most successful clubs in the country. However, in the National Super Cup, Linfield failed to win a second trophy, losing to Dungannon Swifts on penalties.
