Rennes vs Marseille Prediction & Tips
After losing 2-1 to Nantes on Wednesday, Rennes know that they must string together wins to challenge for third place and a place in the next UEFA Champions League. Despite that defeat, the team has the firepower to get back to winning ways and stay in contention for that third spot, having scored seven goals and conceded none in their last two home games, as well as a 2-0 win over the other team in the Top 2 of the table (PSG) in October.
Rennes have verged on perfection at home in all competitions in 2022 (G8, P1), although all league wins in that run have come against bottom-half opposition. There is also something of a legacy to uphold as the last home games in Ligue 1 of the last three seasons have been wins.
Despite inferior opposition, Marseille’s 3-0 win over Lorient was great to lift spirits after the European exit, and could see them qualify for the UCL with a game to spare if they win this match and Monaco drop points against Brest.
Action is expected from the away side, as they have scored in their last 14 Ligue 1 away games since the end of the October international break (G10, E2, P2). With most of those wins, seven, also coming without conceding a goal.
Players to watch: Lovro Majer has freedom of movement after scoring his first Ligue 1 brace in Rennes’ last home game. The last of those goals came after the hour mark – as did both of Gerson’s goals in Marseille’s last two away wins.
Key stat: The last six league meetings between these teams have produced fewer than 1.5 goals per game.
