PSG vs Lille Prediction & Tips

Both Paris Saint-Germain and Lille saw action in the Coupe de France on Wednesday night, but with mixed fortunes. The home side beat Brest 3-1, extending their impressive record to 15 matches without defeat in all competitions (G11, E4). They scored two or more goals in 12 of those 15 matches, which is a negative sign for the visitors, given that the Parisian side has scored four or more goals in three of the last four meetings between them.
Those matches are part of an unbeaten run of five games between them (G4, E1), and Luis Enrique’s side will be keen to add to that record here. And with closest rivals Nice facing Monaco later in the day, there is every chance that PSG can extend their sizeable eight-point lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table.

Lille start this matchday in fourth place in the standings and are still in contention for those coveted Champions League places in the 2024-25 season, but their 2-1 loss at home to Lyon in midweek ended their unbeaten start to 2024 (G4, E1). However, those were the first goals they conceded in this calendar year, and with Ligue 1’s second-best defensive record coming into the day (GC: 14), the visitors might feel they have a chance of nullifying the reigning champions’ attack.

What would really give Lille a boost in their goal of returning to Europe’s top competition for the first time since 2021 would be to improve their inconsistent away record. Wednesday’s defeat marked Paulo Fonseca’s side winning just four of their 16 away games in all competitions this season (E9, P3), but it’s hard to imagine that record improving here given that they lost in nine of their last ten official visits to the Parc des Princes (G1).

Players to watch: PSG’s Kylian Mbappé scored from the penalty spot in the December meeting, giving him one of his 30 goals in 29 appearances this season. Lille’s Jonathan David also scored in that match, but has not registered any of his last eight goals playing away from home.
Key stat: PSG (12) and Lille (11) rank first and second with the most combined Ligue 1 goals scored in the 15 minutes before halftime.
