After the defeat against Uruguay, Peru were definitely out of the running to qualify for the World Cup finals. In the five matches played this year, Oscar Ibañez’s men had only one win, two defeats and two goalless draws. The match against Paraguay will be a ‘match for honour’ for the ‘Blanquirrojos’, an opportunity in which the team will have to show its best qualities.
Paraguay, after a goalless draw against Ecuador (0:0), secured their ticket to the World Cup in advance. The team will return to the World Cup for the first time since 2010, and Paraguay’s president declared the day of qualification a bank holiday. Overall, Gustavo Alfaro’s side had a sober qualifying campaign: they scored few goals (only 13 goals, only Chile and Peru scored fewer), but their defence was one of the strongest of the tournament, conceding just ten goals (only Ecuador and Argentina conceded fewer: five and nine, respectively).
