Monaco vs Brest Prediction & Tips
Going into this penultimate round of Ligue 1 fixtures, Monaco are the league’s most in-form team if we take the last ten matches (G9, E1). Eight straight wins have underpinned the Monegasques’ success this season, and they must make it nine if they are to challenge Olympique de Marseille for second place, and in the process keep Rennes at bay in their pursuit of the final Champions League berth. Ironically, Rennes and Marseille meet next Saturday, making it all the more important for Monaco to win this match.
A repeat of the 2-0 defeat in the first leg against Brest would be a catastrophe for Monaco, but having won the last two home games against the Brittany side by more than two goals, Philippe Clement’s side seem to have a good chance of pulling off a win. In fact, since mid-September, only Reims have left the Stade Louis II with three points (G11, E3, P1), while five of their last six home wins have come with a clean sheet.
Brest’s season may appear to be over, but Michel Der Zakarian’s side are still looking to secure a final position in the top half of the table for the first time since the 1990/91 season. Three straight wins put the team in that fight, but losing 1-0 to Strasbourg on the last matchday made things difficult for them.
There is still a chance as Brest’s direct rivals, Lille and Nantes, also have difficult away games. If Brest continue to alternate wins and defeats in their away games, there is little hope of getting anything out of here, as the team managed to win on the last matchday they played away from their stadium.
Players to watch: Wissam Ben Yedder has opened the scoring for Monaco in four of the last six games in which he has scored, while Franck Honorat has scored the decisive goal for Brest in two of the last three away wins.
Key stat: No Ligue 1 side has gone in at half-time trailing in more league games than Brest, who have done so on 10 occasions.
