Mansfield is a modest team that only once, half a century ago, managed to be promoted to the English second division. However, the Stags have shown stability and have never fallen below the fourth tier in the country. Last season in League Two they finished third, securing promotion again.
Already in League One, Nigel Clough’s side proved to be a competitive team during the first half of the season. However, in recent weeks they have suffered a clear dip in performance. It may be that the team felt that relegation was assured or that the cup exit against Wigan affected their morale. Since then, they have accumulated several defeats, including the one against Shrewsbury.
Northampton had their finest hour around the same time as their next opponents, even reaching the English Premier League. However, their achievements have been similar to Mansfield’s, staying mostly in League One. Last season they finished a lowly but safe 14th.
Currently, Kevin Nolan’s side are on the brink of the relegation zone. Their performance in January has not been very convincing. Although they managed to beat Burton, ending a winless run since early December, they then suffered defeats to Lincoln and Bolton, as well as a 0-0 draw against Wycombe. Their only recent joy was a 3-2 win over Huddersfield in a match full of goals.
