Luton vs Wolves Prediction & Tips
Despite a winless start to his first Premier League (PL) campaign, Luton manager Rob Edwards believes he has seen “progression” in his side’s performance. The Hatters boss insisted his side “fought hard” in their latest 1-0 defeat to Fulham last weekend, but Edwards will be fully aware that playing with heart alone will not be enough to keep Luton in the top flight as they return to Kenilworth Road to face Wolves.
Home form was expected to be Luton’s saving hope this season, but they were rudely reminded of the grim reality of the PL when they lost 2-1 to West Ham in what has been their only home league appearance this season. There is little historical foreshadowing to help Luton here as this is the first league meeting between these teams since 2007, but there was one other engagement between them, a 1-0 FA Cup win in January 2013, when Luton were in the Conference and Wolves in the Championship.
The fortunes of both teams have changed dramatically since then, with Luton gaining coveted promotion to the top flight, while Wolves even made it to the Europa League. Competing in Europe now seems no more than a distant memory, with Wolves having lost four of their first five league games (G1), but perhaps some consolation can come from an away win over an Everton side that occupies, along with Luton, the bottom three in the table.
That’s one of two away wins for Wolves in 2023 (E3, P9), and with that 1-0 at Goodison Park as their only clean sheet in all that time, it’s clear where their biggest problem lies. Those drawbacks reared their ugly head again in Wolves’ last outing, a 3-1 loss to Liverpool after which manager Gary O’Neil lambasted the “crazy goals” Wolves conceded.
Players to watch: Luton’s Mads Andersen is the scorer of their only PL goal at Kenilworth Road this season, and given that his last eight goals for the club have been headers, he is quite a presence in the air. Wolves’ Nélson Semedo is one of eight players in the PL to have committed ten or more fouls, earning him three yellow cards.
Key stat: Luton have conceded goals after the 60th minute in all four of their league games this season.
