Juventus are at the epicentre of the fierce battle for a Champions League place at the end of the season. In addition to Juventus, competing for fourth place are Bologna, Lazio, Roma and Fiorentina. With five games to go, Juventus are in fifth place, and the gap to Bologna is just one point.
Before the start of the previous matchday, Juventus were in fourth place, but unexpectedly lost to Parma 1-0 away, allowing Bologna to overtake them. The defeat was the first for the Turin side after the replacement of Thiago Motta by Igor Tudor.
For Monza, this season is all but over. The team of Alessandro Nesta, who was sacked earlier but then reassigned as new coach, is in last place in Serie A. Under certain scenarios in the games of other teams in the relegation zone, a loss to Juventus could send Monza to Serie B for good. They are currently 11 points off 17th place, which is the salvation spot.
