Jagiellonia will always remember last season, 2024. That was when they became champions of the country for the first time: before that, in more than a century of football, they only had one cup, relatively recently. It is quite possible that they will manage to retain the title in the Ekstraklasa. But for now, several Polish projects want to take the trophy.
Last spring’s success brought the first Champions League arrival in Białystok. There, the debutant overcame ‘Panevezys’. But then they faced very difficult opponents: ‘Bodø/Glimt’ in the main European competition, and immediately ‘Ajax’ in the Europa League. However, by moving to a tournament of lower status, they managed to advance to the playoffs. Moreover, they successively eliminated ‘TSC Bačka Topola’ and ‘Cercle Brugge’, scoring three goals in three of the four matches. With one of the favourites, the Spaniards, in Seville, they lost 0-2.
Betis have been playing for several years under Manuel Pellegrini. The year 2022 was particularly outstanding, as they won the Copa del Rey, as well as fifth place in La Liga. They were unable to repeat either one or the other. But they continued to secure a place in European competitions, even last spring, when they overtook ‘Villarreal’ in the fight for seventh place. Now they are again competing in La Liga, but this time for fifth place.
Last season’s result only secured them a ticket to the Conference League. After the victories over ‘Kryvbas’ in the qualification, they did not have the best results in autumn, but the December victories over ‘Petrocub’ and HJK allowed them to play in the playoffs. And there they eliminated ‘Gent’ and ‘Vitória Guimarães’, winning comprehensively as visitors.
