Everton, who had started the season well, are currently going through a rough patch. The team has lost three of its last five games, conceded a draw, and won only once. In their last Premier League outing, the Toffees lost 0-2 away to Manchester City. During this slump, they also exited the English League Cup after a defeat to Wolverhampton.
Tottenham, after a mixed previous season (17th in the league but winners of the Europa League), are approaching this new campaign with greater confidence. In 13 games in all competitions, Spurs have conceded only two defeats, both in the Premier League: one on the opening day against Bournemouth, the other on the last day at home to Aston Villa (1-2).
Tottenham currently sit sixth in the table with 14 points, five points behind leaders Arsenal. In the Champions League, the Londoners drew 0-0 at Monaco in midweek in their second group stage match, following a previous draw against Bodø/Glimt and a win over Villarreal. They remain unbeaten in the competition.
