Borussia Dortmund have made a major impact in the play-offs for a place in the last 16 of the Champions League. The German side thrashed Sporting Club 3-0, demonstrating that, despite failing to progress directly to the next round, they are still one of the contenders to reach the final, as in the last edition.
Borussia Dortmund finished the league phase in tenth place with 15 points, after five wins and three draws. Sporting Lisbon finished a lowly 23rd with just 11 points. They were able to sneak into the play-offs thanks to the goal average (+1).
Logically, these two teams have met on more than one occasion. In the 2016-17 edition they met in the group stage with Borussia winning twice and also in the 2021-22 edition, with a win for each side.
If they are eventually eliminated, Sporting Lisbon will surely take one positive from this and that is the chance to focus 100 per cent on the league, where they are currently two points clear of Benfica and six ahead of Porto. A frenetic end to the league is on the horizon, where the slightest mistake could cost them dearly.
The opposite is true for Borussia Dortmund. The German team is playing everything on one card. They have no chance of fighting for the Bundesliga title, given that they are 13 points behind the leaders, and if they slip up, they will not be in a position to fight for Europe either, as they are currently eleventh, six points behind the sixth-placed team. That’s why they are aiming to pull off a surprise like last year to sneak into the final. It won’t be easy, but they have already shown that they can do it.
