Burnley vs Crystal Palace Prediction & Tips
Although Burnley manager Vincent Kompany again deflected pressure from his players to the VAR after their latest loss to Bournemouth (2-1), recording eight defeats in their first ten league games (G1, E1) mark that he needs to look a little closer to home to find the reasons for the team’s poor performance. That loss on the south coast was the third time this season that Burnley have fallen in a Premier League (PL) match after scoring first, the joint most in the division.
That partly explains why the Clarets find themselves in the relegation zone and at increasing risk of being cast adrift by the teams above them. Pressure is mounting on Kompany as he looks to turn the present around, and some factions of the fans are beginning to turn against him, so the visit of a Crystal Palace side against whom Burnley are unbeaten in five meetings (G3, E2) may be timely.
Palace will not be making the trip north with any sympathy for their opponents in their fight to avoid relegation, as the Eagles are also looking for points after picking up just one win in their last six PL clashes (E2, P3). A 2-1 loss to Tottenham ends that streak, and with Roy Hodgson’s side not in midweek cup action, they have been given extra time to prepare for their first trip to Turf Moor in nearly two years.
Despite sitting comfortably in mid-table, Hodgson has riled some Palace fans after comments he made about the lack of impact the young players who saw action in the defeat to Spurs had. Perhaps that is a sign of a man under pressure to turn results around, but with Hodgson’s statistics winless in his last five meetings as manager against the “Clarets” side (E1, P4), his 501st game in charge of an English club in all competitions may not be so cheery.
Key battle: With top scorer Lyle Foster out again due to illness, Burnley can look to Zeki Amdouni for goals, but his two goals for the club so far have come on the road. Marc Guéhi’s main role will be to stop opposing strikers, but he may have one eye on his own conquest, as he did when he scored at Turf Moor when Palace last visited this venue in a 3-3 draw.
Standout Fact: No PL team has scored fewer goals during the early stages than Palace (one) in this league campaign.
