Bordeaux have not defeated the defending champion of a Ligue 1 season in a league match since March 2015 (D4, L8), but with Lille’s ongoing domestic inconsistency, as well as Bordeaux’s recent morale-boosting 10-0 cup win, this could be their best chance yet. It would go a long way to relieving the pressure on coach Vladimir Petković, who has led Bordeaux to their worst 18-game start to a Ligue 1 season (in terms of wins, points and goals conceded) since being relegated in 1959/60.
Furthermore, Petković’s men are yet to win a Ligue 1 home game when starting as a pre-match outsider this season, and a 0-3 loss the last time Lille visited (in 2020/21) offers little inspiration. With a mammoth average of 2.22 goals conceded per league game, it’s little wonder they haven’t recorded consecutive victories this Ligue 1 season.
Lille boss Jocelyn Gourvennec has had to wait until the halfway point of the season to take on former club Bordeaux for the first time, four seasons after an embarrassing cup defeat to fourth-tier Granville and persistent league struggles led to a mid-season dismissal.
In the bottom half of the table once again, he’ll be hoping the Lille board shows the same patience they did when the club dropped from fifth to 14th during the first of Claude Puel’s six seasons in charge in the 2000s. Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the visitors’ seven draws this Ligue 1 season – only Bordeaux had more (eight) after 18 matches – is that Lille opened the scoring on every occasion bar last round’s 0-0 stalemate at home to Lyon.
Players to watch: Five of Hwang Ui-Jo’s six Ligue 1 goals this season have been his team’s first, when excluding own goals. Meanwhile, Burak Yılmaz opened the scoring in Lille’s last competitive away trip (at Wolfsburg) – three of his five competitive club strikes this season have been match openers.
