Bayern enters the Bundesliga season as the reigning champion and favourite to win the title. The team has already won its first trophy of the new season: the Super Cup, after beating Stuttgart 2-1. The goals were scored by top scorer Harry Kane and new signing Luis Díaz.
Pre-season preparation was of a high standard: after finishing last season’s league, Bayern participated in the Club World Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals, losing 2-0 to PSG, and then played a series of friendlies in which they comfortably beat all their opponents.
Leipzig had a season to forget: the team finished in seventh place and missed out on European competition, which is unusual for the club in recent years. The end of the season was particularly weak: in the last five games, they failed to win, drawing three and losing two. They finished six points off the Champions League places and just one point off the European places.
