Bayer Leverkusen – Freiburg (Pick, Prediction, Preview) Preview

Bayer Leverkusen vs Freiburg Prediction & Tips

Bayer Leverkusen’s 2021/22 season will come to an end at the BayArena after three consecutive multi-goal league wins officially secured third place in the Bundesliga and qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League (UCL). While it has been almost 30 years since their last trophy, the ‘Eternal Bridesmaids’ can also celebrate breaking their record for goals scored in a single campaign, reaching 78 in this campaign and thereby surpassing the 77 they recorded in 2001/02.
While they have been more successful in away games than at home this season (32 points compared to 29), Leverkusen have only lost two home league games since the end of October (G7, E2), scoring an impressive 28 goals in that span (GC:11). Moreover, they have only once trailed at halftime at home in this entire Bundesliga campaign and so Leverkusen will be looking for another good start to close their season on a high note.
Their opponents this time around, Freiburg, have had a wonderful season and a win here could even lift them into fourth place and a UEFA Champions League berth — provided their DFB Pokal final opponents RB Leipzig fail to make it three points from three in their match. A 4-1 loss to Union Berlin last time out hurt them badly, but having beaten Leverkusen in their last two meetings, the visitors are confident they can give themselves a chance of finishing in the top four for the first time since the 1994/95 season.
Freiburg’s away form may be peaking at the right time, as they are unbeaten in their last five away league games (G3, E2). However, playing away from home in the final game of the season has not paid off in the past, highlighted by the fact that Freiburg have lost their last seven away league games when it’s their turn to go on the road on the final day of the campaign!
Players to watch: Patrik Schick has scored four goals in Leverkusen’s recent run of three straight wins, and also scored his side’s first goal in eight of the last 12 games in which he has found the back of the net. Meanwhile, Lucas Höler has come alive late for Freiburg, scoring four of his last five goals after the break.
Weekend stat: Freiburg have dropped just seven points all season after opening the scoring — the lowest figure in the Bundesliga.
