The winner of the two-legged clash will earn the right to compete in League A, the elite division of the Nations League, next season.
The Austrian national team competed last season in League B, where they faced Norway, Slovenia and Kazakhstan.
They came very close to first place and direct qualification to League A, falling just two points behind group leaders Norway. However, Austria beat Slovenia by three points to secure second place in convincing fashion. During the tournament, the team suffered only one defeat, away to Norway, and in all other matches they always scored points.
Austria’s home performances were particularly impressive. Comprehensive victories over Norway and Kazakhstan by an aggregate score of 9-1 showed the strength of the team, but an unexpected 1-1 draw with Slovenia on the last matchday essentially deprived them of a direct qualification to the A League.
Serbia’s A-League team faced serious opponents: Spain, Denmark and Switzerland. At the end of the tournament, the strong Swiss team was unexpectedly relegated, while Serbia, with 6 points, finished in third place.
Serbia’s only victory in the group was in the home match against Switzerland, 2-0. This result allowed the team to avoid relegation and keep alive their hopes of continuing to compete among the best. On the road, however, Serbia’s performance was unconvincing. Two blank defeats against Denmark and Spain with an aggregate score of 0-5, as well as a 1-1 draw with Switzerland, show that the Balkans face serious problems away from home.
