Augsburg vs RB Leipzig Prediction & Tips

Augsburg scored in the final minutes to earn a 1-1 draw at Bochum last Saturday, scoring an injury-time penalty for the second time this Bundesliga season (E1, P1). As a result, they have won just one of their last seven league games (E2, P4), a run that could soon take them closer to the relegation zone. But as they are currently seven points clear of danger, there is no need to panic just yet.
That’s partly because this is the fourth consecutive season in which the Fuggerstädter have earned between 19 and 22 points after 20 games, and achieved relegation on the three previous occasions. Only a slim majority (13 – G3, E4, P3) of their 22 points have come at home, suggesting that their run without beating RB Leipzig since September 2017 could be extended, especially as they have also failed to win in their last seven home clashes against their opponents (E3, P4).

That’s certainly good news for the Red Bulls, who beat Union Berlin 2-0 last weekend to stay close to the top four in the table. Their first win of the calendar year was much needed after suffering three consecutive league defeats and relieved some pressure on coach Marco Rose, who called the result a “deserved and important victory” on the occasion of his 70th game in charge.
It was also the team’s first clean sheet since early November, and getting another would be invaluable given that they have allowed an average of 2.4 goals per game in their last five league away games (G1, E1, P3). Rose must be desperate to get off to a good start in this clash, as his side remains unbeaten when scoring the first goal playing away from home this season (G4, E1).
Players to watch: Phillip Tietz has been a good luck charm for Augsburg since joining the club in July as he is unbeaten in all of his scoring appearances this season (G3, E1), and three of those four goals were registered before the 30th minute. Like Tietz, Xavi Simons arrived at Leipzig in July 2023 and his last three goals were scored between the fifth and tenth minute.
Key stat: Augsburg have gone into halftime with the lead on the scoreboard just four times this Bundesliga season, although they are undefeated when this happens (G3, E1).
