Atalanta vs Cagliari Prediction & Tips
It has been an up-and-down start to the new Serie A (SA) season for Atalanta (G2, P2), who lost to Fiorentina 3-2 in their last league match despite having an early lead. They continued this alternating trend by beating Raków Częstochowa 2-0 on Thursday in the UEFA Europa League, and will surely be eager to make it back-to-back wins for the first time since early May.
Atalanta’s only home league match this season ended in an impressive 3-0 win over Monza, and in each of their last three SA matches in front of their own fans, “La Dea” scored at least three goals (G3). However, coach Gian Piero Gasperini will have to do without the injured Gianluca Scamacca, who scored two goals against Monza, as he will be out for at least a month with an injury.
Cagliari have definitely been a ghost team recently for Atalanta, winning four of their last five league games at the Gewiss Stadium (P1), and Claudio Ranieri’s strong defensive style, which already rescued a goalless draw against Torino and a half-time lead against Bologna in their two away games this season, could again cause problems for an attack-minded home side.
However, their inability to score may show its worst side, as the Sardinians have scored just once in their first four league games (E2, P2), and only bottom side Empoli had worse results in the division before the weekend. However, the away side should not be so quick to write off, as coach Ranieri has a very positive record in his matches with Atalanta on the bench (G12, E9, P4).
Players to watch: Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners enjoys playing in front of his fans, having scored five of his previous six goals for SA at home. Former Atalanta player Andrea Petagna has now scored six goals against his former club since leaving in 2018, including his last SA goal at Bergamo in June.
