Last season was a rather ambiguous one for Aston Villa. Unai Emery’s side performed spectacularly in the Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals but losing to PSG. Meanwhile, in the Premier League, the Birmingham side finished sixth and alternated stumbles with good results at the start of the campaign.
Newcastle, in the previous season, finished just above Aston Villa – in fifth place. Eddie Howe’s side had a disappointing start to the campaign, but towards the middle they improved markedly and managed to qualify for the Champions League. However, in the last few rounds, the Magpies came close to slipping further down the table.
