AS Roma vs Venezia Prediction & Tips
Jose Mourinho’s tears of joy after leading Roma to their first European final in 31 years quickly gave way to one of his usual anger at refereeing after two goals in 11 minutes condemned his side to a 2-0 defeat to direct rivals Fiorentina in Serie A (SA). That game stretched Roma’s winless run of SA matches to four (E2, P2) – the last time it happened was in January 2018 – and has sparked fears that Roma will not qualify for Europe next season.
Of course, winning the UEFA Europa Conference League would leave Roma qualified for European competition, but tying up that sixth place in the league with a win in this match would take pressure off the team ahead of that long-awaited European final. Playing at home should help as, in addition to being unbeaten in their last home game since 2014/15 (G5, E1), the team has won three of their last four home games in this SA (E1) and have kept ten clean sheets at their stadium, drawing as many as anyone in the league.
Venezia arrive in the capital on the back of a thrilling 4-3 win over Bologna, having scored the first winning goal in second-half stoppage time of an SA match for the first time since December 2001. That result kept the Venetians alive after losing ten games in a row, although the team will be relegated before kickoff if Salernitana do not lose to Empoli
If Salernitana go down, Venezia have a chance to be saved, but they must win this game. Although having lost the last few away games does not make it look easy at all, although it is true that they lost the last five games by only one goal which, together with the surprising 3-2 win in the first leg match, makes Venezia hopeful.
Players to watch: Lorenzo Pellegrini has given Roma the lead, or increased it, with seven of their last eight goals. In contrast, Mattia Aramu has equalized for Venezia with his last four goals, including in the first round match between these teams.
Key stat: No team has seen more yellow cards at home than Roma (47) or away than Venezia (54) at the start of the matchday.
