The home team is still remembered by veteran fans of Spanish football. However, this year marks a not very pleasant anniversary: two decades since their last participation in the First Division. Nevertheless, at least they have avoided stagnation in the lower categories. In 2022, the ‘mechanical cheese’ returned to the second division after a spell in the third tier and immediately qualified for the promotion playoffs. However, they failed to make it back to LaLiga and finished a lowly thirteenth last season.
At least Alberto González’s side have managed to maintain a similar level. After a rather erratic start to the season, the team has improved considerably. Since mid-November, they have suffered just one defeat. In 2025 they have picked up points steadily, mainly through draws, although they did manage to beat Almería. However, on the last matchday they lost 1-3 to Tenerife.
Zaragoza are still a respected club, but especially by older fans who remember their many Copa del Rey successes and even their international triumph in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. However, the team has not played in LaLiga since 2013 and, over time, their attempts to return have become less and less frequent. Last season, they finished in fifteenth place, a position that has become a regular occurrence for the ‘Aragonese’.
The team got off to a strong start this season, winning three times and taking ten points in the first four rounds. But the enthusiasm of the fans quickly faded, as victories became more and more sporadic. In January, Víctor Sánchez’s side only managed to win at their third attempt, against Málaga. They began the month with a goalless draw against Cádiz.
