Atletico Madrid has had a disappointing start to the season and the Madrid club is currently languishing in 14th place, just one point above the relegation zone. Unable to win in the first two league games, Diego Simeone’s side must take all three points at Alavés to finally kick-start their season. The Argentine coach will once again put his faith in his two strikers, Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth, the only two goalscorers for Los Colchoneros since the start of the 2025-2026 season.
Argentine international striker Julian Alvarez, who started in the first two La Liga matches, opened the scoring in Catalonia before Espanyol won 2-1. The former Manchester City striker scored his seventh goal in the last 10 league games. With 17 goals in 37 games last season, Alvarez came close to beating his club record for goals in the league (18 goals in 2021 with River Plate).
Norwegian international striker Alexander Sorloth, who was a substitute on the first day, started on the second day… The former Villarreal player was rewarded for the confidence shown in him by Simeone, as he opened the scoring against Elche (1-1) early in the game on 23 August. Sorloth has just scored his 10th goal in 11 La Liga matches! This is an impressive performance for the player who finished as the club’s top scorer with a total of 20 goals in La Liga last season. The Norwegian scored four goals against Real Sociedad (4-0) and a hat-trick in Girona (0-4) on 10 and 25 May.
