The first semifinal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be a rematch of the 2021 final, when Senegal hosts seven-time champion Egypt.
Senegal won on penalties in that AFCON 2021 final and has gone much further this time than in its disastrous title defense two years ago, when it only reached the round of 16. They are now appearing in the semi-finals for the third time in the last four editions. Perhaps helped by the sending off of a Mali player in the quarter-finals, after taking the lead with the only goal in their 1-0 win, the team continues to find ways to win in all kinds of situations. They have been victorious in ten of their last eleven matches against African opponents (D1). Knowing they need to go one step further, coach Pape Thiaw has demanded greater efficiency in the final third from a team that has already scored three goals in three different games in this tournament.
Egypt has reached the semifinals for the third time in five editions and is looking to improve on its second-place finishes in 2021 and 2017 by lifting the trophy for the first time since 2010. Coach Hossam Hassan has promised that his team will correct the defensive errors that led to the goals conceded in the 3-2 victory over Ivory Coast. However, Egypt has only kept a clean sheet in two of its last eleven games (W6, D3, L2), so ensuring a perfect defense seems more complicated than it appears.
