Inter will be looking to maintain their supremacy at home against a Lecce side threatened with relegation, in a Serie A where the title race leaves little room for further points drops.
Inter twice let their lead slip against Napoli on Sunday, although the 2-2 draw allowed them to maintain a three-point lead at the top of the table ahead of this midweek fixture. It was the Nerazzurri’s first draw of the season and only the second time they have dropped points after taking the lead (W14, D1, L1) in the current Serie A campaign. Further slip-ups for Cristian Chivu’s men could prove costly in their Scudetto aspirations, with AC Milan and Napoli hot on their heels. Those two teams are the only ones to have taken points from Inter in their last eight league games at home (W6, D1, L1), fueling hopes of an immediate reaction after Sunday’s disappointment.
Lecce also failed to capitalize on their advantage, collapsing after an hour of play and losing 2-1 to Parma on Sunday, finishing the game with nine players. Eusebio Di Francesco’s side have lost three of their last four games (D1) and are only three points clear of the relegation zone. This postponed match from matchday 16 is their only game in hand over two of the bottom three teams. Adding to their worries, the Apulians have lost five of their last eight away games in all competitions (W2, D1), and those two wins were by the narrowest of margins.
