Heidenheim had a rather difficult season last year. The team finished in 16th place and was forced to compete in the relegation play-offs to retain its place in the Bundesliga. In a closely fought match against Elversberg, the club managed to stay in the top flight thanks to a last-minute goal in the final seconds of the away leg.
