The team has a glorious history and is very popular, even by high German standards. Although they have not been very successful recently, they achieved a seventh place in Bundesliga 1 not long ago and returned to European competitions. However, their experience in the Conference League was short-lived, as they only made it through one round of qualifying. Last year, the ‘horses’ finished in the relegation zone.
Köln do not plan to stay in the 2. Bundesliga for long. With the arrival of Gerhard Struber as coach, the team has been living up to the status of favourites, although the competition at the top of the table is very strong. In January, they started with a defeat against direct rivals Hamburg, but then managed to beat Elversberg. They also beat Eintracht in Braunschweig.
Schalke
Schalke, like their next opponents, are a club with a long and successful history, and have a large fan base. However, in recent years they have faced problems. After being runners-up in the Bundesliga, they were quickly relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. Despite gaining promotion, they were unable to consolidate their position in the top flight again. Last season, the ‘Blues’ finished tenth in the second division.
The start of this season was not at all promising, with Schalke close to relegation to the 3rd Bundesliga. Although coach Thomas van Wonderen, who arrived in October, did not manage to change much at the beginning, it seems that he needed time. Since November they have suffered only one defeat, and in the winter they alternated wins and draws. However, on the last matchday they were beaten 2-5 at home by Magdeburg.
