Lazio vs Monza Prediction & Tips
Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel became the first goalkeeper to score in a Champions League match in 13 years when his stoppage-time goal, hailed by coach Maurizio Sarri as “an act of justice,” earned his side a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. That was the first of their three consecutive games at the Stadio Olimpico and they now need midweek positivity to help them improve their Serie A (SA) form.
A 3-1 setback to Juventus last weekend left them with three defeats in the first four games (G1) of a top flight campaign for the second time in their last 60 seasons, with the other occurring in 2014/15. In that campaign, the “Biancocelesti” won 4-0 on matchday five to finish in third place, so home fans could already be dreaming of a good year, as they beat their next opponents Monza without conceding in both SA matches last season.
Lazio are the only team Monza have yet to score a goal against in SA and the visitors don’t like traveling here either, having also lost here 3-0 to Lazio’s neighbors and rivals Roma last season. However, they start above the home side after a 1-1 draw against Lecce last weekend, which was described by coach Raffaele Palladino as “two points lost” when he highlighted his side’s club-record 25 shots on goal in that game in SA.
Their profligacy in front of goal could prolong the pain of not yet finding the back of the net away from home this SA season (P2). One of the few positives for diehard Monza fans is that they have never failed to score in three consecutive away games in the top flight, raising hopes of breaking their unwanted SA drought against Lazio.
Players to watch: Ciro Immobile has posted Flashscore ratings below seven for five consecutive games for Lazio, making his goal scoring target more difficult as Monza remains one of only three clubs he has yet to score against in the top flight. Another player looking to erase previous injuries is Roberto Gagliardini, who lost his last two personal visits to Lazio 3-1.
Weekend stat: Lazio have registered an average of seven corners per game after four rounds, the highest in the league.
